JPI Oceans, Joint Call Pre-Announcement: Impacts of Deep-Sea Nodule Mining

On August 1, 2017, a number of JPI Oceans member countries will launch a joint call for preproposals to study the environmental impacts and risks associated with seabed mining.

This call is being conducted as a follow-up of the Joint Action under the framework of JPI Oceans. It calls for cruise proposals for the RV SONNE in early 2019 in the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone (CCZ), subequatorial eastern Pacific.
Expected funding partners include:
Belgian Federal Science Policy Office (BELSPO) and Flanders EWI Department, Belgium
The Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF), Germany
Research Council of Norway (RCN), Norway
The Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO), The Netherlands
Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), Portugal

Expected associated partners with in-kind contributions include:
France
Italy
Sweden
International Seabed Authority

Focus of the Call
Proposals should address the topics outlined in the call text, to be published on August 1, 2017. Some important topics will include:
- the fate and impact of the particle plume generated during mining operations,
- the definition of appropriate indicators of ecosystem health and threshold values for harmful effects on the environment as well as
- measures to mitigate significant adverse effects,
- an assessment of associated environmental risks, and
- implementation of scientific knowledge and respective uncertainties into improved legislation, including analyses that address the science-policy interface.

Proposals should be linked to an industrial field trial / demonstration project of mining equipment in the deep sea.
