In a global economy where companies are subject to an ever increasing competition, it has turned out to be crucial to render technical processes more economic, while at the same time keeping up and improving upon safety standards. In the chemical industry this need for greater efficiency has led to production plants that are highly integrated, that is, material and energy recycles are introduced to minimise losses of raw materials and to reduce energy input (see Fig. 1).However, such integration efforts lead to a dramatic increase in complexity of the dynamic behaviour of the respective processes. In particular, traditional control strategies designed for isolated production units often fail in a plantwide context.
