Das neue KMU-Instrument richtet sich an alle Arten von kleinen und Mittleren Unternehmen (KMU) mit einem hohen Innovations- und Wachstumspotenzial. Anträge können ausschließlich KMU stellen, die entweder im Verbund arbeiten oder eine Einzelförderung anstreben. Das KMU-Instrument handelt sich um ein Querschnittsinstrument, da die Antragseinreichung sowohl innerhalb der Bereiche "Grundlegende und industriellen Technologien (LEIT)" als auch "Gesellschaftliche Herausforderungen" möglich ist. Das KMU-Instrument ist in drei Phasen gegliedert: In Phase 1 wird die Machbarkeit der Idee überprüft, in Phase 2 soll die Marktfähigkeit getestet und das Produkt zur Marktreife gebracht werden und Phase 3 sieht einen verbesserten Zugang zu Risikofinanzierung vor.
In Phase 2 ist die Einbindung von Forschungs- und Kooperationspartner als Unterauftragnehmer möglich.

Folgende Aufrufe sind 2015 für Phase 1 und Phase 2 geöffnet:

b) Aufruf LEIT: Nanotechnologies, Advanced Materials, Biotechnology and Advanced Manufacturing and Processing
? NMP-25-2015: Accelerating the uptake of nanotechnologies, advanced materials or advanced manufacturing and processing technologies by SMEs
? BIOTEC-5b-2015: SME boosting biotechnology-based industrial processes driving competitiveness and sustainability

c) Aufruf LEIT: Space
? Space-SME-2015: SME Instrument

d) Aufruf Health, demographic change and wellbeing
? PHC-12-2015: Clinical validation of biomarkers and/or diagnostic medical devices

e) Aufruf Food security, sustainable agriculture and forestry, marine and maritime and inland water research and the bioeconomy
? SFS-08-2015: Resource-efficient eco-innovative food production and processing
? BG-12-2015: Supporting SMEs efforts for the development - deployment and market replication of innovative solutions for blue growth

f) Aufruf Secure, clean and efficient energy
? SIE-01-2015: Stimulating the innovation potential of SMEs for a low carbon energy system

g) Aufruf Smart, green and integrated transport
? IT-1-2015: Small business innovation research for Transport

h) Aufruf Climate action, environment, resource efficiency and raw materials
? SC5-20-2015: Boosting the potential of small businesses for eco-innovation and a sustainable supply of raw materials

i) Aufruf Europe in a changing world inclusive, innovative and reflective Societies
