The PhD project will make a comparison between young children with typical development speaking different languages and growing up in different cultures (German and English), analysing pragmatic development over 1.5 years. This will allow for differentiating universal pragmatic skills from those that are socioemotional and/or culture dependent. Researching into two elementary skills a child depends on to become a communicative being, namely speech acts and turn-taking, promises clarification of universal pragmatic skills that have a determining (and enabling) influence on structural LA.
When investigating into turn-taking and speech acts, we will take a close look at how those are realised in communicative interaction and how they develop throughout LA. Differences in adjacency pairs will be considered both within and across languages.
