This project considers the potential of using the highly acclaimed video game Disco Elysium as a teaching tool for (critical) Peace Building in the political science classroom. The article holds that the video game, which is set in a conflict riddled post-revolution/post-intervention city of Revachol, can provide an analytical frame for seminars concerned with the difficulties of peace building in post-conflict societies following international interventions and internal war. By using the game as a narrative teaching tool which focuses on the narrative elements of setting, characterization and emplotment it allows students the possibility of thinking about how the existing dynamics of power, foreign intervention, economic despair and socio-political fragmentation contribute to the failure and unintended consequences of liberal peace building projects. While the analysis shows the parallels between the critical peace building literature and the game which both emphasise unintended consequences and the inevitable failure of liberal peace building, the project argues that the games can offer more than the critical literature as it provides a story world beyond reality which is free of the limiting boundaries of the “realistic”. The possibilities of interaction and decision-making provides a hook for group discussion of highly political issues in a fictional setting which encourages students to escape the shackles of their own politics. A fictional story-world in the video game Disco Elysium can provide students with the possibility of thinking outside the box as they are able to considers “unrealistic” possibilities and alternative forms to liberal “peace building”.
