Thermoelectric materials generate a thermovoltage when exposed to a temperature gradient. They are central components in thermoelectric generators, which allow for recovering electric energy from waste heat leading to higher energy efficiency and lower emissions. To reduce processing costs as well as to open up novel fields of application, coating- and film technologies are in the focus of this research project. Apart from the compounds' thermoelectric properties, also the mechanical properties of these layers and films crucially affect technical applications.
The objective of this PhD project is to develop new processing routes in order to produce mechanically stable layers of different thermoelectric compounds. The project will encompass the preparation of layered samples, a detailed characterisation and testing, as well as the investigation of the structure-properties-correlation.
