How do we change from performing a monotonous task on automatic pilot to controlled behaviour? A
network of brain regions is important for this type of adaptive behaviour by signalling the need for
controlled behaviour, implementing a cautious response strategy, and facilitating more controlled
behaviour. However, although we know which brain regions are involved in these processes, how all
these separate regions of the brain work together to produce adaptive behaviour remains a mystery. The
current project aims to use a combination of brain stimulation techniques to study how this feat is
achieved in the healthy human brain.
