EMRIS - Emerging risks of smouldering fires  - is a project that addresses the problem of hazardous low-temperature reactions in porous solids like biomass, fossile fuels, waste materials, foams etc. At circumstances, heat produced in low-temperature chemical reactions cannot entirely be dissipated. This leads to a temperature increase inside the porous material which further accelerates the ongoing reactions. Eventually, this positive feedback loop ends in a fire.
In the project the conditions for such incidents will be studied. The prevailing physical parameters like reaction front velocity, heat release and concentrations of reaction products will be studied under boundary conditions which reflect practical applications.

The project is a cooperation between Stord-Haugesund University College in Norway, University of Lund in Sweden and Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg, Germany. Funding is provided by the Research Council of Norway.
