This study identifies discursive constructions of colonial objects and lays bare the development of imperial knowledge during the long nineteenth century within three larger fields of interest: (i) colonial trade and the marketplace, (ii) visual culture and the exhibitionary complex, (iii) literary representations of colonial objects.
