Short biography
Dr. Bernd Hansjürgens is Professor for economics, especially environmental economics at Martin- Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg, head of the Department of Economics at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research – UFZ, and leader of the UFZ research area “Environment and Society” (staff about 100 persons). From 2003-2013 he was speaker of the Helmholtz Programme “Terrestrial Environment” (500 scientists from three Helmholtz Centres included) and from 2007-2012 of the Helmholtz Research Initiative “Risk Habitat Megacity”. The international United Nations’ TEEB study “The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity” (2007-2010) was coordinated in the UFZ economics department. From 2012 2 to 2018 Bernd Hansjürgens led the study “Naturkapital Deutschland – TEEB DE”, with more than 300 researchers involved.
Dr. Hansjürgens received his Ph.D. in economics at Philipps University of Marburg. From 1995- 1996 he was visiting fellow at the Centre for Study of Public Choice in Fairfax/VA (USA), and from 1996 to 1997 at the Centre for interdisciplinary research at University of Bielefeld. His primary scientific interests are questions related to environmental economics, in particular instrument choice in environmental policy, climate change policies, economic valuation, the Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity, and megacity research. His methodological backgrounds are Public Finance, New Institutional Economics, and Environmental and Resource Economics. Dr. Hansjürgens has written and published more than 25 books and more than 200 papers and book chapters. He has broad experience in inter- and trans-disciplinary environmental research and coordinated a lot of national and international research projects. He was involved in numerous scientific evaluations.
